Step 5:  Choose Your Representative

Once you start searching for a home, you should also look for someone to represent you, if not all through the search process, then at the time you decide to present an offer on a home.

If you decide to do the home searching yourself, you should contract with an attorney well-versed in local real estate law who can describe the buying process and local purchasing customs to you.  This person will help you construct a sound purchase offer and other legal documents and will represent you on the day the property you have bought becomes yours.

If you already work with an attorney, ask if s/he can represent you in a real estate transaction.  If s/he is not a real estate law specialist, ask for a referral.  Some employers provide attorneys as an employee benefit.  If you are a member of an organization, it may provide attorneys as a benefit or be able to refer you to one.

If you want help looking for homes, understanding local real estate markets, or figuring out what to offer for a property, you may feel more comfortable working with a real estate professional.  These professionals are more commonly referred to as agents or brokers.   Read the document below to help you decide whether or not to use the services of an agent and how to choose a good one.  You may want to take a look at some agent evaluation questions to help you choose your real estate professional.
