Step 4:  Determine the kind of home and neighborhood you want

Once you feel comfortable with your financing approach, it's easier to narrow the field of homes and neighborhoods in which you would like to live.

There are several types of homes, and depending upon your likes and dislikes, some may be more appealing to you than others.  Open the document below to learn about

  • what to look for when buying a newly constructed home vs. an existing home
  • distinguishing among single family, duplexes, townhouses, condominiums, and co-ops
  • what to look and look out for when purchasing a condominium or townhouse
  • what makes a good neighborhood for your residence.

If you haven't looked at them yet, now is a good time to fill out the "features you want" and "features you don't want" checklists.  Home hunting is much easier if you have a good understanding of what you can live with and what you can live without.
